BookLocker Guide To POD and Ebook Publishing

Reasons Not To Use Us

We’re not going to give you some sales bull about how we are the best for every author. Here are some reasons why BookLocker, and POD publishing in general, would not be a good match for you:

1.) If the primary way you want to sell your print book is through book stores, we’re not the right company for you. No POD company is. Most bookstores will not stock POD books because they want a 50% discount to do so. Given the cost structure of POD, it is not possible to offer such a deep discount.

That said, bookstores do buy from us when their customers ask them to special-order a copy.

Authors making the most money on our system are selling directly to the customer through BookLocker.com, Amazon.com, or their own sites.

2.) If you are not comfortable interacting entirely online, we are not the company for you. All our interaction is done via email and our author messaging system. We find it the fastest, most efficient way to get a book up for sale. In large part, only interacting with authors online is why BookLocker can get books on the market faster (4-6 weeks max) and can pay better royalty rates than our competitors.

3.) If you don’t like to market your book, we are definitely the wrong company for you. Our entire business is built around helping authors cost-effectively find their market. Epublishing (POD and ebooks) combined with the Internet offers the best way for new authors to do this without dishing out thousands of dollars. For about $500 (or less if you submit your own cover), our authors can get a book published and into the market to see what its potential is. And because Booklocker takes no rights and has a cancel-at-any-time contract, books with potential can easily be taken to the next level - whether that is a bigger and better marketing effort or the sale of the rights to a traditional publisher.

4.) If you’re physically located anywhere besides the United States, the UK, or Canada, we can’t work with you. We are currently unable to publish books for authors outside of the U.S., the UK, or Canada.

CANADIAN AUTHORS: We will work with Canadian authors who have a U.S. address where we can ship their books. (We’ve lost too many shipments in Canada after books have crossed the border.)

The reason we won’t work authors in other countries is because of shipping charges and lost shipments. Foreign authors really need shipping insurance, which can increase the cost of books by up to $3 per book. Other U.S. POD publishers probably won’t warn you about these shipping costs up front. Basically, you wouldn’t like what we’d have to charge you if you wanted to order your own books and have them shipped overseas, and chances are good the shipment might be lost anyway.

Europe is a different situation in that our printer has a facility there - so we can transmit orders to be shipped out of that facility. We can only offer black-and-white-interior publishing (with a color cover of course) to European authors.
